Nothing stops my web surfing in its tracks like running into old-time baseball footage. Especially when it goes beyond the usual. This one is pretty obscure, but someone uploaded it to YouTube. And I am eternally grateful!
Here’s the Babe, and a quick story to go with it. This was an exhibition game and the date was April 7, 90 years ago. Many of remember that the baseball season didn’t start until April, versus in late March now. They only played 154 games back then, and the World Series was the only playoff round, so it was easier on both ends.
The Babe was probably a little angry at this point. The Yankees had let him go, and he still wanted to play one more season. So he returned to Boston, who traded him nearly 2 decades earlier, in the most infamous trade in baseball history. Babe’s Boston team was the Braves, perennial also-rans. He didn’t have a wonderful final season, but late in that season, he hit 3 homers in a single, legendary game.
So have a listen to the Bambino’s bat. And get excited for spring training!
